As a neonatal nurse, Sigrid thought she was well prepared for her first birth in 2008, but was totally knocked over by mainstream medicine’s “factory style” birth care. She was induced, got an epidural, then pushed flat on her back for three hours before her cesarean for persistent OP presentation and “cephalopelvic disproportion.”

Two years later, she had the most empowering experience of her life when she had an unmedicated midwife-supported 9 lb 8 oz Hypnobabies VBAC in the hospital. Her passion for midwifery model of care and physiological birth was sparked here and only continued to grow over the years.

In 2013, Sigrid had an intense but healing home waterbirth of a rainbow baby after two back to back miscarriages, including one with significant obstetric hemorrhage.

Her fourth birth in 2014 was a precipitous accidentally unassisted (almost) pain free birth at 42 weeks and 5 days, caught by Sigrid’s husband in the tiny master bathroom of their home.

Sigrid’s last birth in 2018 was the homebirth of her 11 lb 6 oz (!) son complete with shoulder dystocia and neonatal resuscitation.

As a mom of five, with her wide range of personal experiences to inspire her, Sigrid has developed a passion to joyfully support moms and babies on their journeys through birth and breastfeeding. She started @stretch_birthwork on Instagram in 2017 to connect with likeminded birth workers through stories, humor, and education.

Sigrid has a bachelors of science in nursing and began her career in 2007, first as a newborn nurse skilled in neonatal resuscitation, then as a L&D nurse with certification in fetal monitoring. She became an international board certified lactation consultant in 2012 and assisted at home and birth center births for 9 years. After some time as a L&D travel nurse, she’s now a Maternal Child Float nurse, covering NICU, MBU, and L&D.

She is a devout Christian, lover of good coffee, and avid flute player.
